Am I a new notary?
Only those who have never held a Colorado notary commission are considered "new". If you have never been a notary in Colorado, follow the instructions on this page.
If you have held a Colorado notary commission before, even if it is expired or you resigned, you will need to renew your notary commission.
How do I become a notary?
- Make sure that you are qualified.
- Attend the state-approved notary training.
- Complete online notary testing.
I have completed the notary training and testing. What do I do next?
- Read the current notary law (PDF),
- Apply and pay online.
You can also review the instructions for new notaries.
- Print out the application.
- Sign your application in front of a current notary (not yourself).
- Mail or deliver the application to the Secretary of State’s office with copies of:
- Both sides of acceptable identification.
- Notary training certificate.
- Notary exam certificate.

What happens after I mail my application?
Watch your e-mail (and junk e-mail folder) for a message with your notary ID and password. Save this information.
I can't use the online system. What do I do now?
Complete the application form found on the notary forms page and mail it to our office with copies of:
- Both sides of acceptable identification.
- Notary training certificate.
- Notary exam certificate.
