New Notary Commission

Am I a new notary?

Only those who have never held a Colorado notary commission are considered "new".  If you have never been a notary in Colorado, follow the instructions on this page.

If you have held a Colorado notary commission before, even if it is expired or you resigned, you will need to renew your notary commission.

How do I become a notary?

  1. Make sure that you are qualified.
  2. Attend the state-approved notary training.
  3. Complete online notary testing.

I have completed the notary training and testing.  What do I do next?

  1. Read the current notary law (PDF),
  2. Apply and pay online.
You can also review the instructions for new notaries.
  3. Print out the application.
  4. Sign your application in front of a current notary (not yourself).
  5. Mail or deliver the application to the Secretary of State’s office with copies of:

    1. Both sides of acceptable identification.
    2. Notary training certificate.
    3. Notary exam certificate.

What happens after I mail my application?

Watch your e-mail (and junk e-mail folder) for a message with your notary ID and password. Save this information.
