Proposed Ballot Measure Deemed Sufficient

“Definition of Person” designated Amendment 62

Denver, March 26, 2010 – Today Secretary of State Bernie Buescher announced that the proposed ballot measure concerning Definition of Person was found to be sufficient as required by statute. Petitions were originally submitted to the Secretary of State’s office on February 12. Following a statement of insufficiency, proponents filed a cure submission on March 18. Secretary of State staff immediately began verifying a line-by-line review of the signatures. The results of the cure submission are as follows:

Cure Sample Summary:

  • Total number of qualified signatures submitted: 47,114
  • Total number of entries accepted (valid): 35,527

These results were included with the original random sample review:

Random Sample Summary:

  • Total number of qualified signatures submitted: 79,648
  • Minimum number of qualified signatures (random sample): 4,000
  • Total number of entries accepted (valid) from random sample: 3,031
  • Number of projected valid signatures from random sample: 60,357
  • Total number of accepted entries necessary for placement on ballot: 76,047
  • Percentage of presumed valid signatures: 79.37%

The results added together resulted in the following:

Combined Results Summary:

  • Signatures required by law: 76,047
  • Total number of qualified signatures submitted: 126,762
  • Total number of presumed valid signatures: 95,884
  • Percentage of required signatures: 126.09%

After review of the submitted petition sections and cure submission and as provided in section 1-40-116, C.R.S., Secretary of State Bernie Buescher declared that a sufficient number of valid signatures have been submitted to certify the petition to the ballot.

Pursuant to section 1-5-407 (5)(a) and (5.3)(a), C.R.S., this initiative will be numbered Amendment 62 on the November 2, 2010 General Election ballot.

The Secretary of State’s office has notified the proponents the petition was deemed sufficient.
