Suzanne Staiert Biography

Suzanne Staiert is the current Colorado Deputy Secretary of State, appointed in February of 2012. She serves as the Department’s chief legal and policy advisor. Prior to her appointment as Deputy Secretary, Ms. Staiert practiced local government law for 19 years. She chairs the State Title Setting Board and the Government Counsel Section of the Colorado Bar Association. She conducts hearings over petition sufficiency, administrative rule making, declaratory orders and Help America Vote Act complaints. She has testified as a recognized expert witness in Colorado state courts in the areas of election administration, record disclosure and election law and regularly testifies before the Colorado General Assembly on proposed legislation. She is frequent lecturer on voting rights, campaign finance and Colorado Open Records Act.

Her career began with the City of Aurora where she represented various departments including the City Clerk’s office and the Licensing Division. This included drafting election questions and working with the public and staff on initiatives and referendums. While in Aurora she drafted Aurora’s campaign finance code and analyzed changes at the state level as they related to the City’s election code. Her final year in Aurora was spent as a part time municipal court judge presiding over trials and arraignments related to the City Code. She also practiced in Arapahoe County and the City of Littleton. In Littleton she served as the City Attorney and worked closely with the Clerk’s office on election issues. She also worked extensively with elected officials on matters of campaign finance and ethical considerations.
