Description of Subjects/Issues |
SB18-225 amended the definition of Early College High Schools within C.R.S. 22-35-
103(10)(a).
• This bill defines an early college high school as “a secondary school that provides only a
curriculum that requires each student to enroll in and complete secondary and
postsecondary courses while enrolled in the four years of high school such that, upon
successful completion of the curriculum, the student will have completed the
requirements of a high school diploma and an associate's degree or other postsecondary
credential or at least sixty credits toward the completion of a postsecondary
credential. The curriculum must be designed to be completed within four years.”
• This bill directs the State Board of Education to review the designation of each early
college high school to ensure that the curriculum offered meets the requirements
within the updated definition.
• At the request of the board, these rules, as outlined, intend to establish a process by
which CDE staff can assist the Board with the review process for early college high
schools.
• Currently, 20 early college high schools exist across Colorado and all of these schools
were engaged in stakeholder conversations in drafting these rules. |
