Notary Renewal

Do I need to attend the notary training if I am already a notary or I was a notary in the past?

If your commission will expire in the next 90 days or expired 30 days or less ago, you do not have to complete training or testing.

You do not have to take the training class or the test if:
  • or


Otherwise, you must:

  1. Attend state-approved notary training.
  2. Complete online notary testing.

 

I have completed training and testing, or I don't need to.  What do I do next?

  1. Read the notary law (PDF).
  2. Register for online access.
  3. Review the instructions for renewing notaries.
  4. Apply and pay online to renew your notary commission. 
  5. Print your application.
  6. Sign your application in front of a current notary (not yourself).
  7. Mail or deliver the application to the Secretary of State’s office with copies of:

    • Both sides of acceptable identification.
    • Notary training certificate.
    • Notary exam certificate.

I can't use the online system.  What do I do now?

Complete the application form found on the notary forms page and mail it to our office with copies of: 

  • Both sides of acceptable identification.
  • Notary training certificate.
  • Notary exam certificate.
