Voter transactions spike on National Voter Registration Day

DENVER, Sept. 27, 2018 -- Secretary of State Wayne Williams announced today that nearly 16,000 Coloradans renewed or updated their voter registration on Tuesday, National Voter Registration Day.

"I'm excited that so many Coloradans updated their registrations or registered on National Voter Registration Day," Williams said. "If you missed it, it's not too late. Please go to www.govotecolorado.com or text "CO" to "28683" (2VOTE) and make sure you're registered and that your address is correct to ensure your ballot is mailed to you!"

The National Association of Secretaries of State in 2012 designated September as National Voter Registration Month with the fourth Tuesday in September set as National Voter Registration Day to encourage voter participation and increase awareness about state requirements and deadlines for voting.

Secretary Williams appeared on local news stations to raise awareness of the importance of registering to vote.

On Tuesday, 2,749 Coloradans registered to vote, 13,223 updated their voter registration, and 61 people withdrew their registrations. The total activity is more than a five-fold increase over the day before. The increase can be seen in the chart:

Secretary Williams also spoke to students at Denver's East High School as part of a voter registration drive hosted by Inspire Colorado and New Era Colorado, organizations dedicated to getting young people to vote.

"Seeing the enthusiasm expressed by the young people at East High School was invigorating," he said. "I'm proud of how easy we've made it to register and vote here in Colorado and I'm glad they joined in the fun!"

However, you must register by Oct. 29 if you wish to receive a ballot by mail.
