To become a notary public in Colorado, you must:
  • Be a resident of Colorado.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be able to read and write the English language.
  • Be familiar with the Colorado notary law.
  • Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving dishonesty, as defined in C.R.S. 12-55-102(1.4), during the last five years.
  • Not have had a felony conviction in your lifetime.
  • Never have had a notary commission revoked.
  • Before becoming a notary or renewing your commission, you must carefully read the Notaries Public Act (Title 12, Article 55, Colorado Revised Statutes, Parts I and II. You should also visit our website.

If you meet the qualifications and have read and understood the law, the next step is to create the notary application. Fill in your contact information, following all instructions carefully. Print the application that is displayed after payment is submitted. To complete the application process, you must sign and have it notarized, then mail it to the Secretary of State together with a copy of an acceptable ID. Please contact our office if any there are questions.

When you apply online, you will automatically receive your Notary ID and password by e-mail. Save this information to print your official certificate and access your notary record for many convenient online functions.
